Ten reasons why Anupam Kher deserves to be the chairman of FTII

Anupam Kher is appointed as the new chairman of FTII on Wednesday, 11-10-2017. He replaces Gajendra Chauhan whose selection in 2014 raised protests among the students of India’s premier film and television school due to his inefficient track in filmmaking and lack of ability to handle the affairs of FTII. Here are the ten foremost reasons for Anupam Kher to be selected for this position.


[1] Anupam Kher has acted in more than 500 movies and over 100 dramas in the last three decades. The 62-year veteran actor was honored by Indian Government with Padma Shri in 2004 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016.

[2] Anupam Kher is a graduate and a former chairperson of the National School of Drama, Delhi. His early plays were performed at the Himachal Pradesh University.  He is the person who has struggled a lot to establish himself as a renowned actor right from the scratch. He used to sleep on railway platforms in his struggling days as an actor in Mumbai.

[3] Besides working in Bollywood films, he has also acted in highly praised international films such as Golden Globe-nominated ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ (2002), Ang Lee’s 2007 Golden Lion-winning Lust, Caution, and the most important Oscar Award-winning ‘Silver Linings Playbook‘ (2013).

[4] Anupam Kher runs a school of acting in Mumbai for people who want to pursue a career in acting. This school was established in 2005 and is the only acting school in the world founded by a professionally active actor-director. It provides professional courses for specialized training in acting and screenwriting.

[5] He is the winner of Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role five times. Anupam won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the 1988 film Vijay. Some of his famous films are Saaransh, Daddy, Lamhe, Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Maara, and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.

[6] Besides being an actor, he is also a teacher, philanthropist, and motivational speaker. Kher has also appeared in Tamil, Marathi and Malayalam languages films.  He is one of the most versatile actors in the film industry.

[7] As a chairman of FTII, he is going to teach the students according to his vast experience in acting. His convincing skills are brilliant and he can teach comic, heroic, as well as villainous roles to the students of FTII.

[9]  Anupam Kher was honored with “Honoured Guest” award by the US state of Texas for his outstanding contribution to cinema and the field of art. He is the winner of several accolades including National Film Award – Special Jury Award for the 1989 film Daddy.
