14 Most high budget flop movies of Bollywood

There are some occasions when Filmmakers make high budget films and directors put their best efforts to make the film successful at the box office. Despite good trailers, it is the box office strength that really counts after the release of a film. Here we present the details of such 15 most high budget Bollywood movies that got flopped leading to a big loss to the producers.

 [1] Shaandaar


A shaandaar film starring Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt in lead roles was released on 22 October 2015. It was projected as one of the most awaited films of 2015 and The Times of India quoted it as India’s ‘first destination wedding film’. Despite luxurious sets and superhit Bollywood songs, the movie failed to perform at the box office. Made with a budget of Rs 75 crores, Shaandaar earned just Rs.40 crores.

[2] Bombay Velvet


Bombay Velvet is also one of the flop Bollywood movies in 2015 that was made with a mega budget of Rs 120 crores but its box office collection was only 43.1 million INR. The loss of Rs 77 crores is known to be the biggest flop in Indian film industry. Anurag Kashyap directed this film starring   Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma but both these stars cannot be blamed for the disaster.

 [3] Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja


Boney Kapoor who is a well-known film producer spent Rs  47 crores for one of his most ambitious projects called Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja that were released on 16 April 1993.  The film proved to be a disaster with a Box office collection of Rs 14 crores. Javed Akhtar wrote the film script starring great Indian actors  Anupam Kher, Paresh Rawal, Sridevi, and Jackie Shroff.  Even famous Bollywood songs like ‘Main Hoon Roop Ki Ran’ and ‘Tu Roop Ki Rani Tu Choron Ka Raja’ failed to get positive reviews from critics.


 [4] Kites


Bollywood film director Anurag Basu and producer Rakesh Roshan made Kites film with a mega budget of 600 million INR. Although great Indian actors starring Hrithik Roshan, Bárbara Mori, Kangana Ranaut, and Kabir Bedi featured in the film but the film collected just Rs  48.56 crores. Rakesh Roshan has produced many successful movies starting from alphabet K but this one was an unexpected disaster.

 [5] Asoka


Asoka is an Indian epic historical drama Bollywood film made with a massive investment of Rs 13 crores that was released on 26 October 2001. Gauri Khan and Juhi Chawla produced this film

Shah Rukh Khan, Ajith Kumar, and Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor played leading roles in the movie that got Filmfare Award for Best Cinematography but performed moderately at the box office. The film features early part of Emperor Asoka’s life and ends with the conquest of the Kalinga region involving a heavy bloodshed.

 [6] Love Story 2050


Love Story 2050 is one of the most expensive Indian films that was made with a mega budget of 600 million INR but managed to collect only 185 million INR at the box office leading a huge loss to the producer Pammi Baweja.

Released on 4 July 2008, this science fiction-romance film stars Harman Baweja and Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra in lead roles.


[7] Raavan


Raavan is a 2010 epic adventure Hindi film starring Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan, and Vikram in the lead roles. Mani Ratnam directed this one of the costliest Bollywood movies made with a 1 billion INR.  This film marked the Bollywood debut of Vikram but due to the disordered script, it lost around %0% at the box office.

[8] Saawariya


Saawariya is a 2007 Hindi film that marked the acting debut of Indian actors Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor.  Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed and produced this romance film whose story is based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s short story “White Nights. The story was not welcomed in the Indian market and   Saawariya proved to be a box office flop.

 [9] Raju Chacha


Raju Chacha os a 2000 Indian film produced by Ajay Devgan and directed by Anil Devgan.  Even the presence of experienced actors Rishi Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgan, and Kajol could not save this Hindi film from becoming a flop and a long and poor screenplay counts for this flop. The film proved to be a disaster for Ajay Devgan as he made it with a budget of Rs 88 crore but the box office collection was only Rs 25 crore.


[10] Blue


Made with a mega budget of Rs 129 crores, Blue became the most expensive Bollywood film in 2009.  SanjayIndian actors  Dutt and Akshay Kumar and Hollywood actor Kylie Minogue were paid a lot for their roles and the film had some fantastic underwater shots. Despite an expensive action choreography, the film collection left the producer disappointed.

 [11] Drona


Goldie Behl directed this 2008 fantasy adventure superhero film starring Abhishek Bachchan, Kay Kay Menon, Bollywood actresses Priyanka Chopra and Jaya Bachchan. Drona movie featured martial arts like Kalaripayattu, Chhau, and Gatka with some amazing sword fighting scenes. Despite this, the movie reviews were disappointing and the 45 crores budget film could get only 15 crores in return.

 [12] Ajooba


Ajooba is one of the old Hindi movies released in 1991 and a fantasy superhero film starring great actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Amrish Puri, and one of the most beautiful Bollywood actresses Dimple Kapadia. Shashi Kapoor produced this movie with a budget of   80 million INR but he could get only 45 million INR in return forcing him to close down his production company.


[13] Besharam


Besharam is a 2013 action comedy Indian film starring Ranbir Kapoor opposite Pallavi Sharda in the lead roles. Himanshu Mehra and Sanjeev Gupta produced this film with a budget of 85 crores but they managed to collect only 35 crores. The negative movie reviews of Besharam made it a flop just within four days of its release.

[14] RGV Ki Aag


 Ram Gopal Varma inspired by the 1975 blockbuster Sholay that remained on the top of the millennium best Indian movies list, produced and directed   2007 action-drama film Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag. Amitabh Bachchan played the role of a dreaded dacoit called Babban Singh who kills a police officer’s Narsimha’s family. The films also contained famous old Hindi songs like “Dum” and “Mehbooba” but poor casting and unimpressive story listed it among worst and flop movies ever made.
